The Recipe

I came across a recipe written on a paper bag for Chocolate Chip Cookies.

On the back side of the bag it says "and me Allen Goodwin".
It's a recipe I got from Veronica a Billy Bud Goodwin. God bless her soul. Next month it'll be 24 years since she passed away suddenly at home. The night she died, I could see lights flashing near her house. I told my husband "I must call Veronica, and see what's going on at the corner".
Much to my surprize, she wasn't the one to answer.

For Christmas, she had given me a little bell. The bell is a woman with a red coat, and her feet dangle and make the bell ring. I have always kept it.
I had known her for sometime. I had worked and laughed with the feisty lady at S.F. d'Eons, when I was 15 or 16. She was small but mighty.
She liked to braid my long hair, she made good cookies, and she told me her favorite Christmas song was O Holy Night.

She left behind three beautiful children, who have grown and have children of their own.

.... Miss you xo

On a Mission

I have been on a mission this week, clearing kitchen cabinets and drawers. Almost ready for the lazy Susan makeover, and then I'll be ready for the Lazy Boy. I tackled the Tupperware cupboard and downsized to a drawer, moved appliances, junked some stuff, gave away some too! Tonight: the recipe drawer !
I came across a list of useless items that cause clutter. Here is some of that list:
bathrooms: old sunscreen, cosmetics, lotions
book shelves
: university textbooks from 25 years ago (I am guilty), cook books, old magazines, catalogs, manuals for stuff you sold at the mile long.
home office:
dried markers & pens, too short pencils, business cards, old computer programs, broken CD boxes
Kitchen: plastic containers with missing lids, lids with no container, pans that you don’t use, mugs and glasses you hate, kitchen gadgets that you never could use properly, magnets on your fridge
Bedrooms: the massage oil you never use, the husband you never sleep with, the sexy lingerie the meter man never took a liking to.
Okay, maybe the last part written by me... I couldn 't resist.

Bologna Club

Well it's giving beautiful weather tomorrow, new years eve, for the exclusive bologna club meet.
Here's an excerpt taken from the Saltscapes magazine (Sandra Phinney)
The Bologna Club has no dues, minutes or bylaws, but
there is one rule: membership is limited to 12 people. “Two
prominent community leaders wanted to join but were turned
down,” says Laurent. “They may forgive us someday—if they
live long enough.”

For my brother

This picture is for my brother. I know he checks my blog out. He's a big fan or two and a half men, and the iHop was mentioned the other day in their script.

Some of you are picky ! I removed the link to the weather... and replaced it with a weather window. But no... you missed the old fashioned link. Complained that my snowflake icons are too hard to see. I did change the background color, and that's about the best I can do.
For you miss Hostess, I put back the weather link . It's right under the weather window. I didn't really know anybody used it.
And I also added a Facebook link for those who didn't know the counter is also a link to facebook.

Our supper guest

So today was different. We had a guest. Son #1 invited his girlfriend over, and she stayed for supper. A pretty, well mannered girl, I might add.
As I did the dishes, Loverboy sat nearby and watched TV.
" I feel old"... I said
"Hmm..." he replied with a smile.

No other words needed.

Crockpot Chicken soup

Loverboy says that the only thing that is good in the crockpot , is my chicken soup.
I add frozen fat free broth, chicken, potatoes cubed, carrots, celery, a handful of rice, pepper, a can of chicken noodle soup, and enough water so it looks like a soup.
8 hours on low, and it's all cooked to perfection. Nothing gets overcooked. Nothing is undercooked.

Monday's Sexual health Post

What ?! I didn't realize it was Monday ! All of a sudden it came to me ! No one reminded me ! These holidays have got me frigged up, I was thinking it was Wednesday.

Today's topic is urinating during sex.

Not a problem for the men, but does happen with about 24% of the women who already have a problem with leaking urine during the day.

Two-thirds leak when the penis penetrates, and the other third, leak urine when having an orgasm.

Leaking during penetration likely means the neck of the bladder is somewhat weak. Leaking only when having an orgasm may mean you have an irritable bladder.

Know that having your g-spot in contact with his penis, will give us gals a strong yet pleasurable urge to urinate.

As for the female ejaculation debate, there now is evidence that this fluid is simply urine, and not some kind of discharge of fluid from some sexual gland.

If you do suffer from some urine leakage, experts suggest you urinate before sex, cut down on caffeine and alcohol, drink less water, and tell your doctor.

Holiday Blog

Thought I better blog soon. I have been busy. Worked a bit, ate a bit, cleaned a bit, and relaxed a bit.
The good news (other than the beautiful pearls and satellite radio Santa gave me) is the fact that I beat the Cook at arm wrestling this Christmas ! Last year she had won. It's not really much of a brag after you see the arm pulling skills my sis has. ! Mom has a big cold, and didn't participate.

Tonight I thought I'd sit with Loverboy and keep him company. Maybe we could watch a movie together. I am too restless to do nothing, so I bring the junk drawer in the living room, and straighten it out while we watch TV. Five minutes later, I ask him about a couple important looking whatchamacallits I found in the drawer, and he is asleep ! So now, I am done the drawer. I threw out a piece of something that may belong to the Canadarm 2 and I am now blogging while he sleeps unaccompanied.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas to all my blog readers from near and far.
As you sit and watch the hustle and bustle amongst your family and friends, sit back, and take a moment to be thankful for all you have in your life. Make a silent wish for those who are suffering, and for little children who are crying.
Remember the ones in heaven, and give 'em a little wink, as they watch over us with love. ...... Miss you.
Merry Christmas.

Wool

The Bedin from Quinan was wondering how much wool does it take to pull one's eyes. Well, actually, it takes a good thick weave.
Just what does "pulling the wool over your eyes" mean?
It simply means to deceive. Supposedly it comes from back in the 16th and 17th centuries when both men and women wore woollen wigs, which were fashionable .

Deer tenderloin

Do you have some deer in that freezer? Deer tenderloin is so good. Everytime I cook it, I am amazed at the tenderness and the flavour. I rub the tenderloin with Olive or Canola Oil. I only use salt and pepper for seasoning.
I use my probe, and set my oven at 450 degrees F.
I cook it on a rack in the center of the oven until the internal temperature reaches 170 degrees F.
(It'll take about 30 minutes.)
That's it... melts in your mouth, and so delicious.

Mrs L

It was Mrs L's birthday yesterday and Loverboy and I were invited for supper.
Now Mrs L makes the most wonderful lasagna on the planet. It's a non tomato based lasagna, and I believe it's made with a homemade bechamel sauce. Hello ?! No wonder it's so good ! It's superb ! A symphony for the taste buds !
Mrs TipToe and I , after some discussion, decided that a half serving of seconds, was definitely okay, before dessert !
And her homemade black forest cake isn't too shabby either.
Thanks for the invite ! The wonderful supper, and the company !

Synthroid at night vs morning

Howdy Sailor... this is "pour toi. "

Research reported in the journal, Clinical Endocrinology : ( a small study of 12 patients)

Researchers reported that taking medication at bedtime, rather than the morning, results in “higher thyroid hormone concentrations and lower TSH concentrations.” TSH decreased and Free T4 levels rose in all patients by changing thyroxine ingestion from early morning to bedtime and T3 levels rose in all but one subject. And TSH decreased irrespective of the starting TSH levels, suggesting better absorption of the thyroid medication when taken in the evening. Interestingly, the researchers found that the circadian TSH rhythm -- the typical daily fluctuations of TSH that occur during a 24-hour period -- does not vary.

The researchers suggested several explanations for the results:

  • Even when waiting at least 30 minutes to eat, breakfast may be interfering with the intestinal absorption of levothyroxine thyroxine.
  • “Bowel motility is slower at night,” which means that it takes longer for the levothyroxine tablet to transit through the intestinal system, resulting in longer exposure to the intestinal wall, and therefore, better uptake of the medication.
  • The conversion process of T4 to T3 may be more effective in the evening.
I also read that people feel not as sluggish by afternoon, and sleep better. Goodnight !

The Christmas Lights

I took the residents out for a drive this early evening. I thought it would be interesting to pass on to you their observations.
Great lights at: Paul Saulnier, the Martells, Pere Maurice, Barry Goodwin, Joe Nickerson, Marjorie Cunningham, Vaughn a Tadd, and Mike & Pam. They liked the chandoliers at the windows at Lauren and Paul's (blue lights). They liked a manger, with many characters, on the point, around Allister and Gail's. They liked the lighted deer silouettes, and other animals at Cathy and Willard N. They liked the lighted chandoliers in all the windows at Lassie's. There isn't many green lights, but they liked the ones at Cheryl and Greg Nickerson's. They like red and white bulbs the most. Arsene and Maurice have lights on the lawn, and that was different they said. Cora and Lucius have green lights up a flag pole, and that was unique. Santa had tipped over at Todd Pothier's. Betty a Philip had a wise man whose light was blinking, and maybe it was going to blow out. There's a real nice big blue star on Ward Cunningham's house, one like none one of us had seen before. And finally Elaine and Brian have a nice lighted swag with red bows.

That's about. No prizes will be awarded. Judging provided free by experienced seniors.

Wrapping paper

I cannot wait for boxing day sales, and getting some new wrapping paper.
Last year I bought this shiny "foil" paper. It was so pretty, I bought 4 rolls, of different colours. Trouble was, it wasn't really foil. It was an awful thin wrap of some sort. It handles awful, and tears, and doesn't really fold. Kind of like wrapping with saran wrap.
Hope to have learned from this mistake. Buyers beware !

Monday's Sexual Health Post

I almost forgot about Monday's post. The week went too fast, pardon the pun.
Today's topic is about premature ejaculation.
Premature ejaculation simply means a man having an orgasm quicker than he wishes.
While it's not really a woman problem, it could certainly affect your sex life.
Anxiety is one of the causes of premature ejaculation, and as men age, most become more experienced with sex, and therefore less anxious, can therefore can hopefully orgasm after the woman has been satisfied.
30% of men ages 18-29, 32% ages 30-39, 28% ages 40-49, and 31% ages 50-59 state climaxing too early is an issue.
To cure this problem, men have tried creams, sprays, and condoms to desensitize the penis, and pills, and even self hypnosis,
Muscle tension doesn't help, and men should do Keigel exercises. A sexual position, such as missionary, is worse for premature ejaculation, because of the muscle tension involved with him in this position. Spooning and woman on top, are better positions for a man who orgasms too fast. They claim the man getting a body massage prior to sex can help, but I find that hard to believe! Masturbation, and using a start/stop method will help to develop the skills to last longer. Aim to have the entire session last 20 minutes. And lastly, what is it they say? Don't hunt with a loaded gun? Or something like that, meaning ejaculate before you get ready for that special romp in the sack.

Cinnamon

I sense a hint of Cinnamon in the air these days.
Hmm... Am I right?

Dinner Party

Had two nights of entertaining. One of family, and one of friends.
They are the highlight of my season.
Much laughter and talk, always makes for a great evening. The best, honest, line I heard last night came from the oceanographer. He was saying that "look at us ! We are old fashioned. We are actually talking to each other, unlike today's society of texting. For god sake, at dances, the young boys text the young girls across the room, to ask them to dance ! How are they going to get slapped that way ?"
I served an entree of solomon gundy on a bit of lettuce, three fresh onion slices, three fresh cucumbers, three saltine crackers and a dollop of sour cream. Wow, I love the marriage of the herring to the sour cream. It was delicious if I do say so myself.
For supper I served dressing (which I make with plenty summer savory) creamed turkey on patty shells, baby peas, and salad. I kept the creamed turkey in my chafing dish, as it's the perfect place to keep it warm. It's in fact a double boiler, therefore there's no chance of scalding the bottom. The trick to keeping it perfect, is you have to make it thicker than usual, because the condensation that forms on the lid, will dilute your creamed turkey.
I once used the chafing dish for my dressing, and I was disappointed at the texture, because it had moisten so much. This time, I heated it in a buttered dish, and buttered the top. (real butter of course, as it's all we use)
The patty shells I ordered from the local bakery came frozen and uncooked, therefore I did some researching as to how to best cook them. I ended up preheating the oven to 450 degrees F, and as soon as I put them in frozen, on a couple insulated sheets, I reduced the oven to 400, and cooked them for 17 to 20 minutes. It was a success.
Dessert Rule: never make something you have made before. Well, I didn't obey that rule and made a Raspberry dessert that remains frozen until you start to eat your main meal. By the time you are done, it's supposedly thawed enough. It was very flavorful, and just a like air. Very light to follow a heavier meal. Has crushed walnuts in the base, and also sprinkled on top. The filling has basically nothing but a couple egg whites and frozen raspberries, and some sugar. Would I make it again? Probably, but I would serve it a little earlier than last night. A couple fresh raspberries, or a swirl of color on the plate would have been a nice touch.
Seating: I always love to use name tags at everyone's place. Last night I surprised my guests with a small photo of them as well. (Nobody is safe with facebook, hehe) The rule to name tagging is to place more talkative people amongst the quieter ones. If you know you have someone who can be very entertaining, place him at the head of the table. I like to seat myself close to the door, as I know I will be getting up. I like to seat the husbands somewhat across from the wives, but not directly across. I think they like to see each other. I never seat them side by side unless we are cooking with stones. Husbands and wives tend to talk more when they are separated.

Charlie brown

SO just why did everyone seem to hate Charlie Brown?
The youngest at the Whitehouse was asking that question on facebook.
Charlie Brown was taken advantage of, abused, and made fun of. I think it was only because he allowed it to happen.
He was certainly not a loser. I liked Charlie Brown.
He showed patience, forgiveness, he wasn't selfish, and he loved the orange haired girl, and Snoopy of course .
Lucy played that football trick with him over and over. He never gave up, and neither should we.

Many fans wanted Charles Schultz to let Charlie Brown kick that football, or even better to kick Lucy, but he decided that Charlie Brown would never kick the football because in life "we do not always get what we want, no matter how hard we try or how deserving we feel ourselves to be."

Eartha Kitt

Eartha Kitt , whose most memorable song was
SANTA BABY , was born in 1927 and died on Santa's Day, Dec 25th in 2008.
Santa Baby came out in 1953.
Orson Welles once called her the most exciting woman in the world. It was he who gave her her first acting job.
She played catwoman in the 1960's batman series.
~~she had no knowledge of her father, except that his surname was Kitt and that he was supposedly a son of the owner of the farm where she had been born. Newspaper obituaries state that her white father was "a poor cotton farmer."~~
She sang and acted and got into a bit of trouble at a luncheon at the White House during Johnson's presidency. She said " you send the best of this country off to be shot and maimed. No wonder the kids rebel and take pot."

I like a lady who speaks her mind!
Thanks to Susie Q for her email of Eartha Kitt as the best Santa Baby version around ! !

Power Bill

There is nothing more predictable than the power bill.
Especially when you have the equal billing plan.
We have had the equal billing plan for many, many years.
When we first started, we overpaid the first year, and had a power bill of $39 a month for a year.
You painlessly pay the same small amount once a month, and never have to fret about having a larger bill in the winter, (or the summer if you have a pool to heat)
It's a good thing, and just so easy. They add up your last 12 months of power bills, and charge you the average of those bills, once a month.

Diet Egg Nog ?

Diet Egg Nog : Party-Size With Egg Beaters

  • 6 cups of fat-free milk
  • 1 cup of Egg Beaters®
  • Equal® or Splenda® equal to 6 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of real vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon of rum extract
  • Ground nutmeg and cinnamon to taste

Heat the milk, Egg Beaters® and sweetener in the microwave on high (on the stove) until thickened, stirring every minute or so. Remove from microwave or stovetop and stir in the remaining ingredients. Cover the mixture tightly with plastic wrap and chill. Dust with additional nutmeg.

Makes six eight-ounce servings of 100 to 120 calories, depending on the milk used.

Diet Egg Nog

4 cups fat-free milk, divided in half

1 package instant sugar-free vanilla pudding mix

1 cup egg substitute

1 tablespoon rum extract

1 teaspoon real vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

In a medium bowl combine 2 cups of milk and the pudding mix; stir well until thickened. Add the remaining 2 cups of milk and the egg substitute; mix well. Stir in the rum extract, vanilla extract, salt and nutmeg until well-blended. Refrigerate overnight. Makes four eight-ounce servings, 121-141 calories, depending on milk used.

So the Lazy Susan

Well, well, well. That topic hit a few nerves. Had many responses, thanks a whole bunch.
1) I am not alone. Stuff flings off and makes us angry. One woman almost swore in her email :)
2) some women are smart, and had the darn thing removed, and put shelves. Most women with shelves keep baking dishes, and the odd pot that they use less frequently. One claimed that her dishes were a bit dusty from lack of baking but, she has shelves because she heard her sister in law complain enough about the dreaded lazy Susan.
3) one woman had her husband use aluminum to make a railing which has been wonderful and it has saved her marriage. (OK, I just threw that last part in to add some punch!)
4) What's on them shelves... many store can goods, and many store baking supplies. The canned stuff doesn't fling off, but the baking stuff does. The cans are not too heavy for it I guess. I also asked about finding the can of peas, but I guess it's not really a big problem. A few told me they store potatoes, and one lady also stores her onions in her lazy Susan. Both are kept in some kind of container.

So I have decided that once the coast is clear, I am going to try moving my canned goods to the Lazy Susan, and moving the baking supplies out and into the pantry unit. I am going to move my pickling spice container, in the basement, in my pickling cupboard, where everything else is.
It's gonna be a new world ! Especially for the cat, waiting for me to get his canned food.

I had a request for another kitchen topic... the Tupperware Cupboard.

The Chandelier

Yup, I succeeded ! And here's a couple pics for you Mrs Wen !

Santa Baby

Santa baby: Are you familiar with the song we girls sing every year?
I don't want everything listed, but I will take the 54 convertible tho, light blue. Make sure it has cup holders.
And the Yacht, I'll take. Let me know where it's tied up, cause the weather outside is frightful. The good shepard's boat sunk, maybe there's a berth there?
I already decorated my tree, but you can bring me decorations from Tiffany's. Just put them high up so the cat doesn't play with them. Place them next to the two most precious ornaments I own, ... Baby's first Christmas rattles. One's already had the handle glued twice, but it's beautiful, at least to me it is.
Of course Santa baby, forgot to mention one little thing,
A ring.
I don't mean on the phone.
What woman would pass up on jewelry?

...........So hurry down the chimney tonight .

59 cents

Yup, that will be the new price for a Canadian postage stamp starting sometimes in January, not 63 cents as I previously posted.
Now the price is 57 cents.

The Permanent stamp ( the domestic regular stamp with the "P" in the red maple leaf) needs no additional postage. It's always worth the going rate despite any increase. You do not need to buy additional postage to use it on your lettermail.

SO, if you or your company uses many stamps, now is the time to buy a roll or two of permanent Canadian stamps.
