AVON

The AVON Black Volkswagon car was part of our household when I grew up. Not sure where it is now, but it contained Wild Country aftershave.

Familiar ?

I was looking through some 1970 stuff and saw this. It looks somewhat familiar. Seems as though I had something with a little doll or trinket inside.
Any comments??

Non-Pillow top mattresses

Non-pillow top mattresses should really be rotated every 3 months for even wear.  Alternating between end-over-end and side-over-side rotation. Martha Stewart suggests if your mattress doesn't have the months posted on the end, you should make your own two tags.

"January" (right side up) and "April" (upside down), the other "October" (right side up) and "July" (upside down). Whenever one of those months rolls around, adjust the mattress so that the appropriate month's name is right side up at the foot of the bed.

Philadelphia Freedom

Yup, it was written as a  favour to Elton John's friend, tennis star Billie Jean King.  King was part of a tennis team called part the Philadelphia Freedoms. Billie Jean King and Elton met at a party. "Elton tried to attend as many of her matches as he could, and he promised King a song after she gave him a customized track suit. "
Taupin, and Elton who wrote it, do admit there is no reference to tennis in the lyrics, but it is an uplifting song, and very patriotic feeling.
Listen to it here

I used to be a rolling stone
You know if the cause was right
I'd leave to find the answer on the road
I used to be a heart beating for someone
But the times have changed
The less I say the more my work gets done
`Cause I live and breathe this Philadelphia freedom
From the day that I was born I've waved the flag
Philadelphia freedom took me knee-high to a man
Yeah gave me peace of mind my daddy never had
Oh Philadelphia freedom shine on me, I love you
Shine a light through the eyes of the ones left behind
Shine a light shine a light
Shine a light won't you shine a light
Philadelphia freedom I love you, yes I do
If you choose to you can live your life alone
Some people choose the city
Some others choose the good old family home
I like living easy without family ties
Till the whippoorwill of freedom zapped me
Right between the eyes

Laura Secord

Laura Secord.
Makes you think of chocolate eh?
She was a war hero actually, during the War of 1812 . "One day in June 1813, American officers went to the Secord home and requested dinner. As she served them, Laura listened carefully as they discussed plans to launch a surprise attack on the British outpost at DeCew House."
At dawn the next day, Laura walked 32-kilometres while avoiding the main roads to alert the British.
Two days later, British and Native troops intercepted the Americans and forced their surrender at the Battle of Beaver Dams. In 1814, the peace treaty came into effect, and everything has been great ever since.
Laura Secord received 100 pounds from England’s Prince of Wales in 1860 for her heroic efforts.

Soon you will be seeing Laura Secord quarters in your pocket change. It's from the war of 1812 coin series.

Co-op Hardware Department

Yes, our local Co-op lost a longtime hardware employee.
And rumor has it, that the Co-op has downsized their hardware/ lumber supply.
DeLatour Co-op tells me that that is not so.
They still have all the plywood and lumber that they always did.

Always good to set things straight :)

Booster Seat

When can your child no longer use the booster seat?
According to the law in Nova Scotia, a child can use an adult seat belt when they are either
nine years old
or
145 cm (4 feet 9 inches) tall.

In PEI, their law says children must be 10 years old or 145 cm (4 feet, 9 inches) to sit in a regular seat with a seatbelt.
In New Brunswick: children can use an adult seat belt when they are 9 years old or 145 cm (4 feet, 9 inches) or 36 kg (79 -80 lb).

Life Cycle 2013

Life Cycle took place in Kentville  this past Sunday.
Myself and other members of the Over 40 Bike Club, joined 477 bikers and rode throughout Kentville and neighbouring communities.
It was hot, over 30 degrees, and beautiful with light winds.
An awesome experience, lots to see and learn.
And a very happy moment crossing that finish line !

Sleeping Positions and Sex

  • Tummy sleepers, or those who sleep face-down, are generally thought to be more anxious or fearful types. So if you are in a new relationship and find yourself facing down instead of your normal sleeping position, you may want to evaluate if you are feeling anxious or fearful as a partner.
  • Back sleepers
Resting calmly on your back is not just a prime position for snoring - it also radiates self-confidence. If your partner is a back sleeper, you can rest assured he is a confident person
  • Opposites attract
Couples who sleep as far away as possible are more likely to be more independent individuals but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't have a health and intimate relationship
  • Intertwined
More than likely, couples who sleep all wrapped up in each other's arms are simply enjoying the intimacy of a new relationship. And they will soon go back to sleeping like the rest of us.
  • Bottom buddies
Touching bums with the one you love is one of the most telling signs about how close you are with your partner. It really does suggest that you are very close.  :)
  • Playing footsie
Couples who sleep with their legs looped are demonstrating their togetherness, but they are also showing their sense of independence and respect for each other's individuality.
  • The spooners
Men who spoon want to show off their protective nature, while women show that they want to be taken care of. Conversely, women who spoon their husbands want to show off their "nurturing side" .

Summer Sex

Summer is coming soon.  Experts claim we have more sex in the summer. ( unless you are married to a fisherman).
Body image and self-esteem usually peak in the summer. We also show more skin.

Make yourself a summer sex bucket list !

1. Balcony Sex ( or patio or backyard ) both safe and thrilling. If you really want to be discreet, lay down on the balcony rather than have sex leaning on the railing.
2.  En Route Sex.   Maybe on the way to the cottage, to that wedding or weekend away. Find a place, and find a way. You'll arrive feeling fulfilled, connected and refreshed.
3. Sex in the rain  ( not really on my list ).  That Maritime rain is just too cold.

Numbness in the genital area

No, this isn't the Monday post !

"It’s no secret that some women can suffer the same numbness in the genital area as some men do from riding a bicycle.

Now researchers at Yale University School of Medicine have found a solution for women suffering numbness — set the handlebar higher in relation to the saddle."

Left lane change on a bicycle

You need to be able to check for cars behind you.
While we did practice looking back at CAN-Bike, I did find the following: "In order to maintain a straight line while looking back, first put your right hand near the middle of the handlebar, which gives you better stability. Before you do that, however, first look in front of you to make sure there are no potholes or other obstacles that might cause you to lose your balance while looking back. Then, take your left hand off the handlebar and rotate your hips so that you can turn your head enough to be able to see behind you."
The key is that as you turn your hips, you also use your right hand to counteract the tendency to want to turn the bike to the left; by using your hand to press right while you look left, you will be able to keep a straight line. Practice in a parking lot or, preferably, a grassy area, in order to become proficient at this."

It's important to see the car, and the driver. Make eye contact. If you can, look back a few times before signaling and the driver will know you are up to something.
Signal left plenty early. Signal more than once.
If the coast is clear, then go ahead and move over into the left-turn lane.
Now that you are in the turn lane, treat it just as you would if you were in a car. You may need to stop if the light is red, and hopefully you are in a low gear that will make restarting easy.  It's very important that when you make the turn you take the widest route possible so that cars behind you can make the turn at the same time.

Bicycle Hand signals

There is now a new accepted hand signal for turning right.
When we grew up there was these 3:

Now there are 2 acceptable right signals:

Remember your palm should face the traffic behind you when signaling to slow or stop.
Use the signals to change lanes, and routes.
You can't use them enough, it lets traffic know what you are up to.

Learning about shifting bike gears

It takes awhile to get accustomed to a bike, and especially the gears.

~~Most bikes have on the left handle bars, controls for 2 or 3 chain rings. You may have numbers 1, 2 and 3... or low, mid, and high. The chain rings are located by your pedals.  These front gears aren't actually used very much at all.  When you first get started biking, you should make a point not to worry about shifting them your front gears at all. Most experienced cyclists will pick one and stay in it probably 90% of the time.~~
If your bike has three chain rings, when you are on 2, the chain should be on the middle ring.
On 1, the chain will be on the smallest, and on 3; the biggest.
So pick 2 or mid, and focus on learning how to use your back gears, the controls on your right handle bar.

The right handle bar: number of  will vary. My bike has 6 gears on this shifter, ( and 3 on the left meaning my bike has 6 X 3= 18 gears.)
If I am riding with 2 on the left, and 2 on the right = I am riding in 4th gear, and the pedaling is easy.
If I am riding in 12th gear ( 2 on left and 6 on right) and encounter a hill, I will gear down to 10th gear ( 2 x 5), or less.
If I am biking downslope, I will use my highest gear ..   Left 3 x  Right  6 = 18.
This is my favorite gear; slow pedaling with much distance,  but I try to ride on the middle chain ring for the most part. All around easier.
It takes practice to learn what gear you need where. In time you will find yourself gearing down without even thinking in preparation for the incline. Shifting down while pedaling hard, and it's hard on your bike. Look ahead, and plan.

Gears to avoid: 1 on left and 6 on right  and also  3 on left and 1 on right.   It's hard on your chain and your sprockets to be at extreme angles.

Don't try to shift when you are stopped. Bikes with traditional gearing are designed to be shifted when the pedals are moving, so don't try to shift when you are stopped. It's bad for the bike to shift when the pedals are not turning.

Gear down before you stop and, and you'll be in the right gear that you want to be to starting out .

New Wedgeport Bell Mobility Cell Tower

~~The New Wedgeport Bell Mobility Cell Tower was officially in operation, at around 8:57 am yesterday June 11, 2013.
The new cell site is a HSPA +/4G site, so look for much faster upload speeds on your smart phones and improved cell service in Wedgeport and many other neighbouring line of sight communities, like hopefully out to Abbotts Harbour on one side and like to Chebogue on the other, plus inland a bit and for our fishermen, service out to sea for many miles. ~~

Simply Frugal

Here are 10 steps to growing potatoes in a container:
  1. Poke or drill several holes in the bottom of a garbage can.
  2. Place your container in a spot that will get a lot of sun throughout the day.
  3. Fill the bottom of the container with about 3 inches of soil.
  4. Place 4 – 5 whole seed potatoes into the soil, making sure they’re evenly spaced.
  5. Make sure the potatoes are completely covered by about two inches of soil.
  6. Water the potatoes thoroughly.
  7. Once the plants have grown to 7-8 inches in height, pour more soil into the container. The soil level should be about three inches from the top of the plants.
  8. Water the plants as needed. (Everyday, unless the rain gets them good)
  9. Each time the plants reach 7-8 inches above the soil level, pour more soil into the container, maintaining the soil at three inches from the top of the plants.
  10. At the end of the season, dump out the contents of your container and dig all around the soil to get your potatoes!
