Learn to Quilt and maybe buy one

Number 24 in the booklet "50 things to do in the Argyle Region" is all about quilting bees and crafts.
Every Thursday at the Acadian Museum in West Pubnico, ladies get together from 1 to 4, to do some handi-work.
I was there today. I bought yarn at Walmart before going, and started a dishcloth during my visit.
( Some knit Acadian flag dishcloths, complete with star, and they are sold in their gift shop.)
They even have a snack, and tea or coffee mid-afternoon.

I witnessed quite a few tourists arrive, and can honestly say that all who enter are welcomed and treated just like royalty.

Ladies were quilting, others were knitting, doing paper quilling, and rug hooking.
The staff do a great job and are very passionate about the museum, the Acadians, and all the events happening yearlong.
They actually collect and sugar rose petals. They also make jams and jellies with just about anything.
I ate a sugared rose petal . Bernice asked " Can you taste what the rose smells like?" Well, actually... I could. It was good ! I also had warm cake and sauce.
My buddy Coral was by, and pleased to see I was now " une vrai femme !" ( a real woman )

These ladies were pleased to see me, a newcomer, and they welcome all to stop by.
They sure know a great deal about yarn, patterns, quilts, thread, socks and colors.
They share their stories, their projects, their ideas, and even pictures of their grandchildren.
It feels like home.
I'll return.

Experience Frenchying

Number 26 in the booklet of the 50 things to do in the Argyle Region is "Experience Frenchying."
And today I did just that ! I visited the "Airport" Frenchy, which isn't really in the proper municipality; but you certainly can visit the Tusket one, just off highway 103, at exit 33.
I looked through non-clothing items, and bought a board game.
I fought a customer for a shirt, in a tug-o-war.
Found some black dress pants for my son (Croft and Barrow) Real nice ! Paid $4.25 for them.
Pants are now all hung up according to size, in case you are wondering. Much easier.
Found Micheal Korrs shorts, which I may give to a size two woman, or sell on ebay for a profit.
It's a great place to meet friends, and make friends.

My Nova Scotia Neighborhood.

"There's plenty to do, for everyone, in our municipality. ( Argyle)
I would encourage people to keep their eyes open, search, find,
and take advantage of all the things there is to do !

And yes, that is a nice dress you are trying on here in the parking lot.
I suppose that's ok.?

Coffee shops

While travelling I listened to CBC radio and they spoke of coffee shops, and how people seem to work and study well in that atmosphere. They write better, and are more creative!

So does it really make sense? Is it the coffee ? Is it the noise ?
Well they studied it, and found that the noise level in the coffee shop to be about 40 decibels. Perfect noise for creativity.  Thinking it may be much like using  a fan for white noise, they decided to create their own atmosphere at home, complete with coffee, and 40 decibels of noise.  Did it work ?  No

In the coffee shop the noise is right, and so is the atmosphere. When you lift your head from your book, or laptop, you get refreshed ideas. You think out of the box, as you constantly see something or someone different.
Your brain loves it all !

I found it very interesting indeed !

Armadillo

Most mispronounce the word Armadillo.
It's a Spanish word, and therefore should be pronounced "arm-a-dee-yo."

It means "little man in armor."

The importance of sex in a marriage / menopause

Two topics on one post.
  • Today is my 19th wedding anniversary. When my boys were 4 and 5, I recall being very pissed at Loverboy for saying that 90% of a marriage was sexual. It floored me ! Although we had a good sex life, what about the credit for being a mom, working, cleaning, dropping off kids at sitters, being a fisherman's wife, and making supper every night ? Tell me all that was worth only 10% of the marriage? Holy Hannah !
I got over it, and am still here.
Then lately I read that Dr Phil said " Sex might not be everything but it registers high (90 percent) on the scale of importance."    Ok, Dr Phil. I get it.
It's the one thing we share with our partners that we don't share with anyone else.
Sex should be a time-out from the daily pressures. And I think , unless you're a hooker; it usually is.

  • Then there is menopause. Many of my friends are menopausal, and being over 50, we feel like we can speak our minds, and tell it like it is.  Here's some advice, and recent quotes.
"I hate the 69 position. 69 is over rated. There's too much going on, and I can't concentrate on everything at once. Focusing on this, then focusing on that.  I don't know if I am coming or going !" (pardon the pun)

In menopause the natural lubricant is scarce. So men, if you are planning to put your penis in the vagina, keep your fingers away from the area. It takes away the moisture. Save it. Don't waste it.

" The only moisture in my underwear these days, is sweat!"

" I wouldn't want to become a man. All that stuff in your underwear. Well maybe just a penis. I wouldn't want the testicles. They're not even cute."

At Doctor Peter Loveridge's

Dr. Micheal Rose, resident, started working with him yesterday and will be here for two years.
He will be in the office every Thursday and sometimes another day during the week.
Dr Loveridge will be allocating patients for him to see and then discuss the case together. For the first year Dr Loveridge has to see every patient he sees.
The municipality was kind enough to provide the extension to his office, however the operating expenses are all his. He will be on his boat as usual for the month of August.
Dr. Rose, will be supervised in his absence by Dr. Shelagh Leahey  who will be in the office on the following dates: August 6,7,11,14,21,26,28.

Do I like oysters ?

To be totally honest, I'm not fond of eating them raw. I like them cooked.

Contrary to what we may say, we don't stop working at 3pm to shuck and enjoy a big feed.

Argyle Township Courthouse and Gaol ( Jail)

Number 48 in the booklet of the 50 Things To Do in the Argyle Region, is "Go directly to jail."

In Tusket, on a busy street corner, is the large white structure. Funny, many of us have never been there.
And I was one of them, until July 8th when I visited.
$4 to enter (at the front door as the side door is a gift shop) , and immediately you feel and sense the jail.
I was amazed at it all ! It's like a real jail. Only worse. Small, cold, very secure, and it must have been unbearable for those who spent time there.
Upstairs is the courthouse, large and bright and very much like today's courthouse.
Who knew !
It's Canada's oldest courthouse.
The gift shop was nice... had some beauty products sold only there.
Open Daily July & August 9am-5pm
Open Mon.- Fri. May, June, Sept., & Oct. 8:30am – 4:30pm

Visit it someday soon !

50 Things to do in the Argyle region

If you haven't picked up this book, well you should.
It's free and given away at many counters. Look for it.

I have decided to do a few things I haven't yet done in my own backyard.

Of course, I will share my experiences with you !

Eel Lake Oyster Farm Tours

Number 6 in the booklet of 50 things to do in the Argyle Region is Oyster Farm Tours.
There are two different tours available.
Click here for their website !

My mother and I were booked for the 1.5 hour tour.
Upon arrival we met 5 tourists also booked, and Colton (tour operator that day) his mom Kim, an employee, and a videographer there for the day.
The area at the shore was quaint indeed. A large wooden built-on-the-boardwalk picnic table and umbrella. Cold bottled water on ice was available, and once we had our lifejackets on, we boarded the boat to check out the two locations on the lake. They have a nice sturdy step ladder for easy entrance onto the boat.
Colton d'Eon was super knowledgeable, and you might think learning about oysters would be boring, but you would be wrong. He was very witty, and the time was flying. We were all ears ! It was incredible indeed. He hauled up some cages, and answered any questions.
Upon our return, Colton shucked an oyster, and soon we were taste testing.  Only two of us were interested in eating the raw product, but let me tell you the oysters Kim cooked right there on the BBQ were indeed delicious.
The entire atmosphere was relaxing, and enjoyable.
Just like sitting with old friends.

Try it ! You won't be disappointed

Maybe you could have a bike club ?

"Maybe !"

My Date with Mom

After reading the booklet " 50 things to do in Argyle, I got thinking that there are a few things I should really experience.
I decided to dedicate a day off to do two from the list, and asked my mom if she would be okay with me picking her up for an adventure. I never told her what or where.  Be ready at 12 and wear sneakers.
I planned the following

  1. A 1.5 hour tour with Ruisseau Oysters
  2. a visit to Tusket Courthouse and Goal
  3. A champagne picnic, on the Shelburne waterfront
  4. Supper at Charlottes lane
  5. A Harbour tour ( but it was too choppy, so we visited mom's sister instead)
She said she was as excited as a kid to get picked up for her date.
I brought her dark chocolate, when I picked her up, and gave her a bar of soap that I bought at the Jailhouse gift shop when I dropped her off.
The entire day was spectacular.
I managed to get us locked into a yard by using a short cut, so mom jumped a fence to get out and I made champagne come out of my nose on our picnic.  Yep, real classy.
I made a toast to life.  I have made it to a half century, and she has made it to three quarters of a century. I am fortunate to still have a mom, and we are fortunate to have each other.

Here's to life !  Cheers !!
